Why A Balanced Body Is Important

Peter Robinson - Wednesday, June 03, 2015

Let my explain what I mean by a balanced body. A good balanced body will have: legs that are the same length and the same amount of rotation; the position of the pelvis will be even; the spine will be nice and straight with the muscles that support it being the same on the right and left side and the position of the shoulders should be even. This is an ideal body and most people do not have a perfectly balanced body. However, the closer your body is to this ideal, the better you will feel.

People with a leg length difference can expect some pain in the lower back, hip, knee, shoulder and neck. It's so important to have your legs in balance. Your legs are your foundations - if one is short you will have a tilted pelvis. This is because when you stand, the side that is short will pull down tilting the pelvis down on that side. This will have a flow on effect up the spine.

Our bodies are marvellous things and they will always try and get your head in a position so that your eyes are horizontal. So, even if you are bent over to one side, your body will twist in some way so it can position your eyes horizontal. This is why it's so important to have balanced foundations - get the foundations even and the rest of your body will have a better chance of being straight.

So how do we get an imbalance?

Good question. Throughout the course of our lives, we are running around playing sport, jumping, falling off things, tripping over things, perhaps playing a one sided sport like tennis, golf, or kicking a ball more with the left or right foot. You may sleep all twisted or sit down with one leg bent under you bum, or have your wallet in your back pocket when you sit.

All these things add up along the way. And our bodies will compensate for various injuries. When we are young it's not so much of an issue, young bodies are supple, but as we age all these little instances of soft tissue disturbances start to have an effect. Things like recurring injury, headaches, lower-back pain, neck pain etc can be traced back to some kind of imbalance in the body. These imbalances may have been there for many years but the pain may only show up in times of greater stress on the body.

Greater stress on the body can be things such as, increased exercise, upping the distance of running, even increasing the amount of yoga, greater stress at work, lack of sleep, poor diet or dehydration. Anything that pushes your body past its normal limits can be the trigger for some sort of pain in your body.

It all comes down to your starting point. If your body is all twisted and then you start yoga or strength work then you are going to build on those imbalances. You may feel better initially but if you stop the activity or up the intensity you will probably run into issues.

It's hard to know if your body is out of balance before you have an incidence of pain. There are some warning signs such as stiffness in the body, tiredness, and a general feeling of not feeling right.

So what can you do:

First off, before you start an intense exercise cycle or you are thinking of going to the gym for the first time in years, get a professional (preferably a soft tissue expert) to have a look at your body to make sure that its in balance. If that's not possible get to work on yourself with tennis balls, foam roller and bak balls. look at the videos on my website and start working and discovering where your tight bunched up muscles are.

7 Tips For Self Massage:

1. Always work both sides of the body
2. Don't be to aggressive to start with.
3. If a muscle is too sensitive use heat first.
4. Always work on the muscles either side of your spine (best worked with the double balls).
5. Find a point in a muscle that hurts and then try to relax through the pain.
6. Small adjustment in position can have a big effect.
7. Don't be afraid of the pain just let it go.

Until next time.
Love and Peace.
